Gates Foundation Official Joins District in Los Angeles

Deputy director of education for the Gates Foundation has been appointed deputy superintendent in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

The deputy director of education for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has been appointed deputy superintendent in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

John Deasy is scheduled to join the district on Aug. 1. News reports about his appointment have suggested he would be a likely candidate to replace Superintendent Ramon Cortines, who is expected to retire in the next two years.

At the Gates Foundation, Deasy led the program on effective teaching. Before joining the foundation, Deasy served as superintendent of the Prince George’s County (Md.) district. He also has been superintendent in the Santa Monica-Malibu (Calif.) and the Coventry (R.I.) districts.
