East Campus Village at the University of Georgia, Athens

Opened in August, the $99.9 million, 1,200-bed East Campus Village at the University of Georgia, Athens, (UGA) has four five-story buildings that encompass 510,115 square feet in housing, office space and common/multipurpose areas. The development includes a parking deck and East Village Commons, and a separate flagship dining facility. Green space and community areas also are integrated into the design.

All units are offered with two, three or four bedrooms and include an appliance and furniture package; phone, cable TV and high-speed Internet connections; heat and air; smoke detectors; and a fire-suppression system. Each building includes a 24-hour service desk, multipurpose room, and conference and study rooms.

Throughout a 10-day period during the December holidays, Ambling Companies, Inc., a company that develops, builds and manages university housing, constructed a full-sized, two-bedroom, one-bath model in the lobby of Brumby Hall — one of the largest traditional residence halls at UGA. Students were invited to tour the model, review renderings and proposed pricing, and provide feedback to members of the development and architectural team. The ensuing comments helped produce a final product that was embraced by students and faculty.

Situated near a busy transportation hub and rapidly expanding part of the UGA campus, East Village Commons is a popular destination spot for students.

The architects for this project are Niles Bolton Associates, Inc. (Atlanta) and Collins Cooper Carusi Architects (Atlanta).
