North Campus at Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.

As part of a major undertaking to move the entire freshmen class to the North Campus at Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., the university needed to expand the campus' dining and recreational facilities. The new Appel Commons caters to the campus' dining and social needs.

The Commons is a multipurpose community center featuring open marketplace dining, a fitness center, campus mail and student services. It includes a large multi-program space for social and educational use. This room connects to an upper-level dining area and can be divided into three spaces.

The marketplace accommodates 624 seats, with a variety of dining settings on the two levels. From informal barstool seating to quiet niches to group-meeting dining and private dining functions, the building serves the needs of the North Campus. Marketplace dining also features a number of stations and a number of diverse meals, any of which can be made to order.

Architect for the project is Dagit • Saylor Architects (Philadelphia).
