Lab Ventilation

University benefits from lab exhaust systems

Greenheck. A new, four-story College of Arts and Science building with state-of-the art science and nursing laboratories was completed last fall on the campus of Grand Canyon University in central Phoenix. The fourth floor of the new building includes six science labs with fume hoods. The building is situated in a non-industrial area with nearby residence halls and other housing. Effective fume dispersion high above the building that prevents re-entrainment of the fumes into nearby fresh-air intakes in residential buildings was essential.

Because of varying classroom sizes and lab activities throughout the day, university officials wanted a laboratory exhaust system that would be both effective and cost-effective to operate. The solution was Greenheck’s Vektor-HS laboratory exhaust system, engineered specifically for demand-based laboratory ventilation. Three Vektor-HS systems were installed to respond to varying demands of the laboratories. The Vektor-HS with Greenheck’s Sure-Aire variable volume exhaust (SAVVE) technology uses a variable area discharge nozzle and noninvasive airflow monitoring. The system maintains the required ANSI Z9.5 discharge stack velocity (3,000 fpm) during non-peak periods by automatically reducing fan speed during low-use periods and simultaneously decreasing the discharge stack area. Energy usage also is reduced for quieter, more economical operation. Greenheck’s Vektor-HS systems typically can reduce energy costs by up to 60 percent when replacing existing lab exhaust systems in demand-based laboratories.

Payback analyses of potential energy cost reductions for the three units revealed that the units will be paid back in two years or less because of their ability to reduce fan speed while still providing the required discharge velocity.

Device control

District manages mobile devices security and effectively

Novell. Bowling Green (Mo.) School District prides itself on preparing students for the future. When the district wanted mobile tablets for a 1:1 computer initiative, its director of technology, Robert Guritz, faced the challenge of balancing technical needs and budget constraints. He began the search for a solution that would meet his criteria.

“We needed to be able to lock out certain features, control what goes on a device,” says Guritz. “Kids can be kids.”

He looked for a mobile device management solution that would be able to:

•Control what students could access, including applications and websites.

•Enforce school security policies.

•Automatically alert IT staff to problems or setting changes.

•Wipe or disable the mobile tablets remotely.

•Support different mobile devices and platforms.

•Scale to manage thousands of devices.

The ability to manage devices centrally also was a priority for the district.

“The tablet is kind of a new frontier for school districts,” says Guritz. “Along with the other devices in our district, we’re adding hundreds of tablets, and we have only two IT staff.”

Guritz and the school district are confident in their choice of Novell.

“Novell ZENworks Mobile Management has allowed me to manage hundreds of devices without having to touch them,” says Guritz. “It has made my job easier without having to dedicate much time to setting up the devices for students’ use. And the cost fit in with what we were looking at spending.”
