The superintendent of San Francisco schools has asked for the City Attorney's office and the FBI to investigate the district's facilities department after a review by an outside consultant found financial discrepancies.

Arlene Ackerman called for the probe in light of a study of the facilities department by Arthur Andersen. It found that the district has no policy for acquiring real estate, that key management positions have remained vacant, that funds have been shifted improperly and that the district's application for e-rate funding was handled poorly.

“This review paints a clear picture of problem areas and confirms major district concerns, while at the same time it enables us to make concrete recommendations because we know exactly what the problem areas are,” says Ackerman.
