MUNCIE - Ball State University's renovated Studebaker West residence hall complex opened its doors to more than 900 students for the 2000-01 school year. Located on the east side of campus, the nine-story hall originally opened in 1964. The renovation project, which was funded through housing reserves, began in 1998.
Studebaker West now features air-conditioned rooms, new furniture, a new computer lab, a fitness room and an accessible central lobby/lounge area. The building previously had contained four separate entrances.
The renovated hall includes 58 additional student rooms, bringing the total to 489. The new Studebaker Studios have living areas that contain two rooms to accommodate separate living and bedroom areas.
The Micro Cafe will serve microwaveable, single-portion sizes of popular food items offered by residence hall dining services. The facility also features new laundry facilities, meeting rooms and four elevators.
Scholer was architect for the renovation, as well as for the original construction of the complex in 1964.
