Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, renovates its recreation center.

The graphics program for the renovation and expansion of the recreation center at Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, helped transform an undersized, outdated facility into a dynamic, modern building.

The new design encompasses more than 100,000 square feet of new construction and nearly an equal amount of renovated space that houses a three-court gymnasium, a 12,000-square-foot weight and fitness center, racquetball/squash courts, a multipurpose room and a mezzanine-level running track, as well as classrooms, laboratories and offices.

Large areas of glazing on the exterior and interior allow views into the facility. Clear, translucent, reflective and colored glass create a play between what is revealed and what is masked. Large-format graphics add to the visual interplay on the glazing of the two-story space.

The graphics program addresses wayfinding at multiple levels, from bold graphics to orientation plans and identification systems. The graphics, in TCU's recognizable purple with aluminum and stainless steel, are an integrated part of the space.

The design firm for this project is Gallagher & Associates (Bethesda, Md.).
