The 150,000-square-foot, $30 million campus of the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC), Toronto, Ontario, reflects the principles of epitomizing wellness, healthy living and sustainability.
Renewable and recycled materials were used whenever possible, such as linoleum flooring and carpet with a high recycled content to reduce resource waste and limit greenhouse gas production. The campus takes advantage of an existing, 115,000-square-foot building shell, — the former Associated Hebrew School — which was renovated and expanded. The 35,000-square-foot addition is wrapped in an efficient building envelope that increases insulation.
A floating, skewed stairway — the atrium's focal point — enhances the sense of interconnectedness within the building. The atrium provides circulation for key spaces, serves as an event venue, and maximizes natural light to all four levels of the building.
The design accommodates three distinct user groups. There are teaching and study facilities for 700 students. A supply center, bookstore and library serve chiropractors in continuing-education programs across Canada and the world. The public has access to the teaching and rehabilitation clinic, and to the retail store. The supply center, bookstore and clinic have ample parking, good public transit access, and are visible and inviting for clients and patients.
