The largest Ohio School Facilities Commission (OSFC) project under one roof, Mansfield Senior High School, Mansfield, Ohio, opened its doors to almost 1,600 students last fall. The 344,680-square-foot facility is a comprehensive high school offering vocational and academic curriculum, as well as special-needs programs, for students in grades 9 to 12.
Construction challenges included building in a dense, residential area with an existing thoroughfare running directly across the site, as well as an operational high school less than 30 feet from construction activities.
Completed ahead of schedule and $3 million under budget, the new facility features a 2,500-seat gymnasium, a 910-seat auditorium with orchestra pit, extensive musical spaces with soundproof practice rooms and a 16,000-square-foot student plaza. A new Career Technology Center has spaces for cosmetology, machine trades, construction trades, business, auto technology and other vocational careers.
Each of the building's four protruding wings houses a school-within-a-school with customized features. Common spaces in the center of the building serve all students, as well as the community.
The architect for this project is MKC Associates, Inc. (Mansfield, Ohio). The construction manager is Gilbane (Cleveland, Ohio).
