LAS VEGAS - The 302,000-square-foot Lied Library recently opened at the University of Nevada - Las Vegas, giving students a state-of-the-art facility and access to close to two million books and scholastic resources.
This facility replaces all library functions from the existing James R. Dickinson Library facility.
The library has 2,500 reading stations and harvests natural daylight while deflecting outside heat. Harvesting natural daylight offsets costs for lighting and cooling. The exterior skin has low-e insulated glass, perforated aluminum sun louvers and deflectors.
The Information Commons, which offers immediate access to 96 interactive computer stations, is centrally located on the bottom floor. Along with Internet-linked computers, the commons provides space for reference librarians throughout the area who provide immediate assistance.
Its architecture is a combination of rounded and angular forms, which provide shaded meeting places along its perimeter that give the structure an intimate scale.
A 100-seat study/coffee area is on the library's ground floor.
