A Meeting of the Minds

The 2006 Educational Interiors Showcase features 100 school and university projects from 27 states. The competition's three jurors met in Overland Park, Kan., in May and pored over the submissions for two days, looking for interior designs that created spaces that “want” to be used and that made “everything a learning space.”

Citation winners include designs that support learning, meet schools' teaching and technology needs, allow for flexibility and expansion, offer natural lighting, and are energy-efficient and cost-effective. The jury used the following criteria to make its selections:

• Creative renovations and use of existing conditions.
• Engaging and delightful spaces.
• Effective use of natural light.
• Sustainable materials.
• Appropriate use of technology.
• A combination of functionality and flexibility.
