New science facility to be built TUSCALOOSA - The University of Alabama is in the design phase of a 200,000-square-foot interdisciplinary science building that will house the university's science programs, research facilities for the chemistry department, graduate and majors chemistry classes, and related interdisciplinary research programs.
The building will create a collaborative, interactive environment for students and faculty, and will provide an adaptable and functional facility for future changes in technology, equipment, processes and programs.
The building will be constructed as a pentagon with five wings; two wings to the south will flank an entry rotunda and house lecture halls, teaching labs, classrooms and chemistry department offices. The remaining three wings to the north will be dedicated to research, housing the chemistry department, interdisciplinary science laboratories and building support functions. Specialized suites have been designed to support ongoing research.
Architect for the project is Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum. Completion of the project is scheduled for November 2002.
