GRINNELL — A comprehensive master plan will meet the needs of Grinnell College in the 21^st century. An important goal of the plan is to strengthen the relationship between the college and the city of Grinnell.

The planning process included a needs assessment of the campus through meetings with all constituent groups on campus, alumni, trustees and members of the community. The campus center, library and athletics facilities will be LEED-certified, which is a self-assessing system that evaluates environmental performance from a “whole building” perspective over a building's life cycle, providing a standard for what constitutes a “green” building.

The existing buildings, grounds and utility infrastructure also have been evaluated. In addition to the 95-acre central campus, the project includes a 365-acre environmental research area.

The plans will address short- and long-term temporary facility recommendations as well as the long-term growth and development of the campus. Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott will serve as campus architect through all phases of the master plan implementation.
