The University Village Apartments at Old Dominion University (ODU), Norfolk, Va., is a $52.7 million on — campus community made up of 10 three-story buildings — five of which offer retail and office space on the ground level.

“We anticipate this interesting mix of tenants will have tremendous appeal for our students,” says Robert Fenning, vice president of administration and finance.

Plans for the retail component, known as the Shops of University Village, will feature a number of restaurants and cafes. A fitness center and the ODU Public Safety Office also are tenants of the community, which comprises 50,000-square-feet of retail and office space.

The University Village Apartments is the first effort by the university to build new housing in 20 years. The complex offers one-bedroom/one-bath, two-bedroom/two-bath and four-bedroom/two-bath options, ranging in size from 500 to 1,254 square feet. There are a total of 278 apartments with 960 separate bedrooms.

The apartments are furnished and were fully leased in time for the fall 2004 semester.

The architect is Niles Bolton & Associates (Atlanta). Ambling University Development Group (Valdosta, Ga.) is the developer.
