Construction Zone: Performance venue
John Paul Jones Arena at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, is a 15,000-seat facility that hosts more than 100 events each year in addition to basketball games. The seating bowl is U-shaped, with one flat end, allowing a stage for non-athletic performances.
An athlete's village provides many amenities: training and weight rooms, men's and women's locker rooms, coaches' offices, study rooms, dietary facilities and practice courts that are soundproofed so they can be used even when an event is in progress.
The project also included site remediation, construction of an access road, parking structure and power plant.
The architect is VMDO Architects, PC (Charlottesville, Va.). Barton Malow (Charlottesville, Va.) is the construction manager.
