FREDERICK COUNTY — Governor Thomas Johnson Middle School has opened to students. The $13 million, 122,000-square-foot facility serves the growing needs of this rapidly developing county.
The middle school includes six team areas, or houses. Each supports a team of 150 students and five instructors. Team areas include five classrooms, a science room, special-education resource room, teacher workroom, restrooms, lockers, and storage space. Each classroom includes five computer stations.
Facilities shared across the school community include technical education classrooms, music rooms, foreign-language and computer laboratories, art studios, a cafeteria, media center and physical-education areas.
The media center is the school's architectural focus. A curved glass front and double-height space are visible from the main lobby. The center contains active and quiet spaces, an audiovisual equipment headroom and network server. Connections are provided to televisions in each classroom.
