The U.S. Naval Academy dedicated a new $4.5 million, 16,300-square-foot soccer facility in the name of its longtime head coach Glenn Warner. Warner led the Midshipmen teams to a 243-65-31 record over his 30-year career.
The L-shaped building consists of a home wing and visitor's wing that are linked by the cylindrical Hall of Honor, which functions as a lobby for the building, as well as a hall of fame for the Navy soccer program. The home wing contains the women's and men's team locker rooms, coaching staff offices and locker rooms, training room, laundry facilities and public restrooms. The visitor's wing, in addition to visiting team and referee locker rooms, contains a ticket office, concessions stand, audiovisual-systems control room and public restrooms for the grandstand area.
The historical context of the Naval Academy led the design team to use highly detailed, precast concrete wall panels for the exterior. The bottom-bearing wall panels are supported by structural, slab-on-grade on steel piles because the entire site is fill-material. Portions of the panel surfaces are sandblasted to provide additional texture to the exterior surfaces, as well as to match the color of the granite buildings across the street. The proportions and detailing of the 60-foot-diameter cylindrical Hall of Honor relates the massing of the building to others at the academy. The roof of the hall is standing-seam sheet copper roofing.
