Project File: Partnership offers unique housing

July 1, 2002
University of California, Irvine, University Hills Housing

California universities require the construction of several thousand housing units just to meet current demand for faculty, staff and students. Many have embraced the public/private concept of partnering with a professional builder.

Planned and developed by the University of California — Irvine's Campus Housing Authority, University Hills provides a broad range of Southern California-inspired detached and attached single-family housing for the school's administrative, research and teaching staffs.

About 200 acres of the UCI campus have been set aside for residential development and the projected build-out for University Hills is for 1,100 residences, as well as parks, greenbelts and recreational facilities. The first phase of a new neighborhood of 98 homes has been completed.

Featuring neo-traditional, California Bungalow and Craftsman inspired architecture, the spacious, two-story homes range in size from more than 1,698 to 2,588 square feet and offer three floor plans. The plans include three bedrooms and 2½ baths up to three bedrooms, 2¾ baths and an optional study, den and bonus room, as well as contemporary kitchens, dining and family rooms, and laundry rooms.

David Smith of Thomas Cox Architects (Irvine) is the architect for the project. Community developer and homebuilder is Brookfield Homes Southland Group, Inc. (Del Mar, Calif.), part of Brookfield Homes of America, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Brookfield Properties Corporation.
