Project File: Campus center revamp

Dec. 1, 2004
Monroe Community College, Rochester, N.Y.

Monroe Community College, Rochester, N.Y., imagined a campus center that would be the hub of college life and enjoyed by the community as well. The design process resulted in a $25 million renovation and expansion.

The centerpiece of the R. Thomas Flynn Campus Center is a bright two-story atrium with an adjacent two-level bookstore that can be accessed from both floors. Extensive use of glass provides display opportunities for the bookstore and transparencies to visually connect across the atrium. A monumental staircase serves as a vertical link to the skylight-covered atrium.

Additional new entrances improve access for students, faculty, staff and the community. A versatile central market-style dining facility can be subdivided for private functions, and serves the meeting and banquet rooms in the Warshof Conference Center, situated within the campus center.

Thousands of square feet of new conferencing and meeting facilities linked to communication technology offer an ideal environment for student activities, faculty programs and community events. Offices in the campus center and an expanded Career Development Center assist students. Nearby, the cyber cafe serves as a lounge, coffee bar and study retreat.

The architect for this project is SWBR Architects (Rochester, N.Y.).
