The preservation project at Villa Duchesne/Oak Hill School, Frontenac, Mo., was centered on updating the school's four-story main building, which was constructed in 1929. The 120,000-square-foot structure, with its classic limestone block facade, was designed by O'Meara and Hills Architects and modeled after a French chateau. The $5.3 million project, originally programmed to take 12 months, was completed in only 3Ω months.
The design/build contractor installed new fire-alarm systems and a new air-conditioning system throughout the building. It also enhanced the existing voice/data communications system. Other elements of the project included installing a cardkey security system and surveillance cameras, replacing the original heating system, upgrading the electrical system, redesigning one language lab and one technology lab, and installing new carpet in 15 classrooms.
The school's $24.5 million “Doorways to the Future” capital campaign paid for the project, which was completed during the school's summer break.
The architect for this project is Hastings & Chivetta Architects Inc. (St. Louis). Hensley Construction (St. Louis) is the design/build contractor.
