SAN FRANCISCO — Lick-Wilmerding High School, a non-profit college-preparatory day school, has unveiled plans for an expansion. The project, scheduled to begin in 2002, includes new workshops and an energy-independent student lounge powered by windmills.
The expansion includes preserving an open space and extending the lower level of the campus, placing the new shops in the center of the campus, under the plane of the existing field. The configuration of the shops will orient them toward each other, defining a shared work idea. The rest of the campus wraps around this centralized core.
In the new design, building forms and landscape are inseparable. The roofs of the shops will be terraced landscapes, and a raised portion of the roofscape will be a central place for outdoor meals and gatherings. A sculpture garden between the theater and the original classroom building will provide a backdrop for a rotation of outdoor student exhibits.
