DRAPER - Combining old world tradition and values with modern architectural design, the $40-million-plus Skaggs Catholic Center recently was completed. The design includes Juan Diego Catholic High School, St. John the Baptist Elementary School and Guardian Angel Daycare, and is arranged in a circle or cloister that echoes the layout of St. Peter's Square in Rome.
Emphasis on the community is represented in the center's 1,350-seat auditorium, as well as a commons area and multipurpose center. The outdoor spaces including patio and courtyard areas, also were key design elements.
Commitment to learning is evident with two large libraries, 76 classrooms, labs and technology centers. The libraries will contain the latest in modern computer equipment and tools, and will house a large collection of old books and periodicals.
Juan Diego High School features 56 classrooms, a library, media center, gymnasium, dining hall, commons area, music and dance rooms, administrative offices, chapel and auditorium.
The library's curved glass wall provides a view of the Wasatch Mountains. The exterior includes ochre-colored brick and green-tinted glass that blend well with the natural environment.
St. John the Baptist Elementary includes 20 classrooms, a library, gym, offices and Guardian Angel Daycare facility. The building is a steel structure, with brace steel frames in classroom areas and load-bearing masonry for the gymnasiums. The building was constructed to last 100 years.
Current building capacity is 1,700 for the high school and 700 for the elementary school. The master plan also includes space for a future parish church.
