HOBOKEN — Construction has begun on a new home for The Hudson School. Since 1978, the school has been housed in the former Hoboken School for Industrial Education, one block away from the new site. The new facility will allow for increased enrollment and add a cultural arts center to the community.
The design of the new $2.5 million, four-story facility re-creates the original 1866 structure of the Martha Institute school, while including modern elements. The exterior of the school will be red brick with accents in cast stone. The focal point of the exterior is a curved monumental staircase that extends from the street to the front door. A mansard roof and large arched windows also are planned for the exterior.
Inside the new building will be 17,000 square feet of new classrooms, offices, science and technology labs, a music and drama room, gymnasium and other activity spaces. Along with other handicapped-accessible features, an elevator will service all floors. Currently, 174 students are enrolled at the school.
Architect for the project is Ehrenkrantz, Eckstut & Kuhn. Construction manager is York Hunter Construction Services.
