State-mandated core curriculum requirements, increasing enrollment, small-group instruction needs, and advancements in technology and science require that schools use classrooms differently.
The Board of Education of Lyndhurst, N.J., determined that the district required additional space to meet state mandates and to provide students with the educational opportunities they need to be competitive with their peers.
Upgrades at Lyndhurst High School will include construction of a new second-floor science wing; renovations to the existing first-floor classroom wing; and construction of a single-story performing-arts addition, including acquisition and installation of furnishings and equipment.
The first floor's existing science rooms will be converted to classroom instruction space, while on the second floor, science labs will be equipped for chemistry, physics, biology and earth-science classes. Science-preparation rooms and academic rooms also will be housed in the new science wing. The performing-arts area will have a band room, music/chorus room and a stage with dressing rooms. New furniture will enable students to be prepared for higher-education science applications.
Electrical service will be upgraded in the existing building to meet technology needs and accommodate additions. Wiring for technology will be installed to supplement existing technology. Fire separation areas, asbestos abatement, ADA barrier-free modifications, restrooms, fire-alarm system, HVAC upgrades and other facility upgrades are in the plan as well.
