Project File: Embracing technology

Daytona Beach Community College (DBCC), Fla., has completed master planning for its 100-acre Deltona campus. Building One was completed in July 2004.

In addition to general computer and networking labs, classroom space and faculty spaces, Building One houses a variety of technology-specific features, including a testing and career center, telecommunications/electronics lab, science lab, simulator lab and a multipurpose industrial-technology incubator.

The 42,500-square-foot facility will offer specific services tailored to serve local business and industry requirements. It will serve as a catalyst for the high-tech industry development that the area will experience in the future, says Robert Williams, vice president for economic development at the college.

The facility replaces a much smaller building, situated in Orange City, and meets the needs of expanding enrollment issues. Designed to be architecturally compatible with the new Deltona City Hall, it is unique from a construction materials perspective in its use of a tilt-wall approach that creatively melds brick cast into concrete, creating the look and feel of hand-crafted traditional brick. The structure also is in full compliance with all hurricane codes.

The architect for this project is Florida Architects, Inc. (Orlando).
