Taraflex Sports Flooring

An aging 25-year-old, poured-urethane floor in the lower gym of the physical-education building at the Montana State University — Billings campus needed replacement. After comparing many products at a sports industry trade show, speaking to several coaches, and testing a Taraflex floor that had been installed at a nearby church, Steve Johnson, recreation director, decided to replace the floor with Taraflex Sport M Plus.

The floor is 7 millimeters thick with an enhanced shock absorption rate of 35 percent. It is designed to deform only around the point of impact. With this restricted area deformation, there are no vibrations, injuries or “dead spots.”

The 12,600-square-foot maple design floor with blue border serves university athletic teams for practice, intramural leagues for play, and community indoor soccer programs for competition. Additionally, the lower gym serves as the university's indoor baseball practice area. Batting cages come down from the ceiling. The lower gym stays in continual use from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays, and activities continue on weekends.

The floor's versatility and simple maintenance are important benefits to the university, says Johnson.

“It's so much easier to clean than the old floor,” he says. “The dust mop slides easily across the floor compared with the old surface.”
