Project File: Unique school with neighborhood design

Deerfield Elementary School, Novi, Mich.

Deerfield Elementary School, Novi, Mich., is a unique K-4 magnet school that houses 500 students in two multi-grade neighborhoods.

Situated in each neighborhood is a flexible, semi-open setting for thematic instruction and projects. Discovery rooms function as resource rooms for technology, and an area for large-group activities and projects. Computer labs with remote laptop space for more focused instruction are placed throughout the facility.

The library learning center is designed for natural inclusion of the outside environment. An amphitheater outside the learning center permits learning to extend from indoor to outdoor. A reading room with a domed ceiling can be used as a planetarium to study the solar system.

The lunch area seats 250 students for four lunch periods. It contains a stage, which is used for school assemblies. The cafeteria also is used for after-hours activities with theatre-style seating for 300.

Architect for the project is Fanning/Howey Associates, Inc. (Williamston, Mich.).
