The Feigenbaum Center for Science and Innovation at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams has received LEED Gold certification for its sustainable design and construction.
Completed in 2013, the 65,000-square-foot center features state-of-the-art classrooms, laboratories, research and presentation spaces, a greenhouse, a photovoltaic solar array, a rooftop classroom and outdoor instruction areas.
College President James F. Birge says the building’s photovoltaic solar panel array is a standout feature that helps make the high-tech building exceptionally energy-efficient.
“Sustainability is extremely important to MCLA,” Birge says. “We are delighted that our Center for Science and Innovation has been recognized at this very high level of certification.”

In addition to the Science Center, the college's recently renovated Bowman Hall is LEED-certified, and features heat- and cooling-efficient devices, new windows and digital controls that provide operational cost savings.
