Hampton Bays Middle School, Hampton Bays, N.Y., is the first public school in New York State to receive LEED certification, and the first CHPS-certified school in the state. The new middle school building is surrounded by a 28.7-acre site and accommodates about 800 students in grades 5 to 8.

A design charrette helped determine the community's design and functional preferences.

The $42 million, 146,400-square-foot structure has 30 classrooms and lecture rooms, a competition-size gymnasium with seating for 500 spectators, library/media center, cafeteria combined with an auditorium and a full theatrical stage, and a home and careers room with six kitchen stations. Outdoor sports facilities include field hockey, soccer, softball and football fields.

The school was designed by BBS Architects, Landscape Architects and Engineers (Patchogue, N.Y.) in association with Beatty, Harvey, Coco Architects LLP (Hauppauge, N.Y.).
