Toronto elementary school honored for sustainable design

Brookside Public School, a newly opened facility for grades K-8 in Toronto, has won a gold rating in sustainable design from the Canada Green Building Council. The 71,000-square-foot school includes a 5,000 square-foot childcare center. The building is aligned to get optimal light and heat from the sun. It also has a large bike rack area and limited parking spots to encourage walking and cycling to school, a grow wall with leafy plants to provide shade in hot days, and a underground concrete cistern to collect runoff precipitation for flushing toilets.
