There is a push in Massachusetts to remove a cap on the number of students who can attend charter schools.
Charter school advocates want the legislature’s Education Committee to produce a bill that would allow the expansion of charters schools in struggling urban areas, the Associated Press has reported. The committee has one week left to act.
Meanwhile, 13,600 Boston students are competing this week for 2,200 available spots in the city’s charter schools.
Advocates say the cap blocks educational opportunities for the state’s school children by hampering the growth of charters and limiting the ability of new charters to open. Opponents say charters siphon away needed resources from traditional public schools.
