A proposed bill would authorize the State Charter Schools Commission to create a nonprofit foundation that would lend financial aid to new charter schools in Georgia.

The state’s House of Representatives recently passed House Bill 897 and the State Senate is expected to follow suit, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Friday.

The commission’s foundation would be able to accept private donations, which could then be awarded to charter schools as grants to help with the start-up costs.

Last school year, there were 310 charter schools in Georgia.
