New Jersey allocates $75 million for school construction and repairs

Nov. 24, 2021
The money will address significant school facility needs throughout the state.

The New Jersey Department of Education and Schools Development Authority (SDA) will release $75 million to help pay for major construction projects in the state.

Of that money, $50 million will be divided among the 31 Schools Development Authority districts; the remaining $25 million will go to regular operating school districts, reports northjersey.com

SDA CEO Manny Da Silva said that the money will address significant school facility needs throughout the state.

The SDA has done hundreds of projects in recent years, but it still has a long list of repairs and replacements needed throughout the state at schools built in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

More than $850,000 is earmarked for the Garfield district. Garfield superintendent Anna Sciacca noted that six of seven elementary schools in the district are more than 100 years old and are plagued with issues but said that the biggest challenge is crowding and insufficient of space for instruction.
