Successful fundraising enables Alabama's women's college to remain open

Jan. 4, 2021
Officials at Judson College in Marion, Ala., say $1.3 million in donations and pledges will make it possible to carry on with a spring semester.

Judson College, a Baptist-affiliated school for women in Marion, Ala., will be able to continue operating after successfully raising more than $1.3 million in pledges.

Al.com reports that the fundraising effort was initiated after Judson officials said late last year that its future was uncertain because of declining enrollment and financial difficulties caused by Covid-19.

The spring semester will begin on Jan. 20 with in-person classes.

The college announced on Dec 15 that it needed $500,000 in cash donations and $1 million commitments before it could re-open in 2021.

Judson surpassed the $500,000 cash goal on Dec. 28. By the end of the year, the combined commitment and giving total was $1,380,546.

"Judson is grateful for God’s great provision through the generosity of our alumnae and supporters, who have sacrificed much during these uncertain times to continue the extraordinary 182-year-old legacy of our Judson College," the college said on its website.

The school was founded in 1838 and is the fifth-oldest women’s college in the United States.

After reaching fundraising goals, the Judson College Board of Trustees approved moving forward with a residential spring semester for all returning students.

Judson is also planning a fall session as trustees continue to review the college’s financial position in the coming months.

Judson College moved to online instruction only on Nov. 9 for the final two weeks of the fall semester. Finals were held the week before Thanksgiving.
