School finance ruling in Texas could lead to overhaul of state education policy

After months of hearing testimony, Judge decides that the funding formula is unconstitutional

The Austin American-Statesman says that throughout the many years of lawsuits and trial over how Texas pays for its schools, no court decision matches the sweeping ruling that has just been delivered by Judge John Dietz. Experts say the changes needed to correct the constitutional violations Dietz identified could lead to the most far-reaching overhaul of education policy the state has enacted in more than 40 years, Two-thirds of Texas school districts sued, claiming that legislature has failed to provide adequate resources to lift students to the state’s higher academic standards.
