President Barack Obama announced a $2 billion down payment from the government and another $750 million in private sector commitments to deliver on his ConnectEd initiative, which will provide 99 percent of K-12 students with access to broadband by 2017 at no cost to taxpayers, according to the White House blog.

Among the private sector donors are Apple, which will donate iPads and MacBooks; AT&T, which will donate free Internet service; Sprint, which will donate wireless service; and Microsoft, which will deeply discount the price of its Windows operating system.
