North Carolina high school investigates distribution of Ku Klux Klan fliers

Oct. 9, 2017
Klan leader says his group placed fliers on cars during a football game at Gray's Creek High School in Fayetteville, N.C.

The principal of a high school in Fayetteville, N.C., says the school is investigating the Ku Klux Klan's distribution of fliers over the weekend at a school football game.

The Fayetteville Observer reports that supporters of the Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan put fliers on parked vehicles during a Gray's Creek High School football game Friday night.

The flier contended that removing Confederate flags and monuments is an attack on the white race and America.

Gray’s Creek Principal Lisa Stewart said Monday that the distribution of the fliers violated school system policy.

“We are aware of the unapproved distribution of material on the campus of Gray’s Creek High School Friday night (10/6) during the football game, which is currently being investigated,” Stewart said.

The Cumberland County School District policy prohibits the distribution of material that contains “personal attacks or abusive language such as language defaming a person’s character, race, religion, ethnic origin, gender, family status, or disability” among other things.

James Spears, leader of the Ku Klux Klan group, confirmed that the group distributed them.

Cumberland County Sheriff’s Lt. Sean Swain says the school’s student resource officer did not receive any reports of fliers being placed on cars at Friday’s football game. Several school officials also say they weren’t aware of the fliers.

In late September, the Sheriff’s Office stepped up security at the high school following derogatory posts on social media related to the display of the Confederate flag and issues surrounding the Black Lives Matter movement.
