Dallas sports magnates donate millions to schools for tornado recovery

Gifts from Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and Mavericks owner Mark Cuban will benefit schools damaged by Oct. 20 tornadoes.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has donated $1 million to a Dallas high school that sustained significant damage in last week's tornadoes.

KTEK-TV reports that the gift from the Gene and Jerry Jones Family Foundation and the NFL Foundation will help Thomas Jefferson High School rebuild its football field and replace football equipment lost on Oct. 20 when tornadoes struck the North Texas area.

Jones surprised the Thomas Jefferson football team with the gift on the field Saturday morning before its homecoming game against Spruce High School.

The game was postponed until Saturday morning and relocated to Loos Stadium following the devastating tornadoes that ripped through their home campus and surrounding neighborhoods.

Thomas Jefferson is one of three Dallas schools that have been closed indefinitely because of serious tornado damage. District officials says Thomas Jefferson will be closed at least through the restof the school year. Two other campuses—Cary Middle School and Walnut Hill Elementary—have described as total losses.

Another Dallas sports magnate, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, also has donated funds for tornado recovery. He has given $1.1 million to the Dallas Education Foundation to help schools recover from the storms.
