Adams 12 to close six schools as enrollment decline leaves 4,800 elementary seats unused

The Colorado district expects the consolidation plan to save about $5 million annually while shifting students into more fully utilized schools and repurposing two campuses for expanded magnet programs.

Key Highlights

  • The district will close five elementary schools and one middle school after the 2026-27 school year to address underutilization and financial constraints.
  • Affected students will be reassigned to nearby schools, and staff will be offered comparable positions to ensure continuity and stability.
  • Consolidation allows for the expansion of programs, including relocating Hulstrom K-8 and establishing a new arts-focused K-8 magnet school.
  • Enrollment decline has significantly impacted district finances, with projected budget reductions of $8.6 million in 2026-27.

Adams 12 Five Star Schools recently announced that it will close five elementary schools and one middle school after the 2026-27 school year as declining enrollment leaves thousands of seats unused across the Colorado district.

The Board of Education approved the consolidation plan on Oct. 7th, which includes the closings North Mor, Rocky Mountain, Centennial, Cherry Drive, and The Studio School elementary schools, along with Shadow Ridge Middle School. The changes will take effect in 2027-28 and are expected to save approximately $5 million annually after the first year of implementation, according to an official statement.

The district says the closures will affect 1,586 students and 341 employees, adding that affected students will have seats at designated receiving schools, while employees will be offered comparable job opportunities elsewhere in the system as staffing is realigned.

In a joint letter to the community, Superintendent Chris Gdowski and Board of Education President Lori Goldstein said:

“As we address declining enrollment, our shared responsibility is to preserve educational opportunities for all students. Throughout 2026-27, we remain committed to a strong academic and school experience at every school and to ensuring students feel welcomed, valued and connected.”

Enrollment has fallen by more than 6,400 students

Adams 12 disclosed in the statement that enrollment at district-managed schools has declined by more than 6,400 students since its 2014 peak—a decline that accelerated between October 2024 and October 2025, when the district lost 1,365 students—nearly three times the decrease officials had projected.

The resulting mismatch between enrollment and facilities capacity is especially pronounced at the elementary level. The district’s elementary schools have room for about 15,370 students but serve just over 10,500, leaving approximately 4,800 seats unused.

Middle schools have capacity for nearly 8,700 students but serve slightly more than 5,200. The district noted in an update on school consolidations that these levels of underutilization makes it more difficult to maintain staffing, electives, student support services, extracurricular activities, and other programming across multiple small campuses.

The facilities challenge is compounded by the financial effects of enrollment losses to the tune of $8.6 million in projected, ongoing budget reductions for 2026-27, including fewer teachers and specialized staff positions, as funding adjusts to the smaller student population, according to the school.

Consolidation also creates space for expanded programs

The closure of the six schools in the district’s portfolio isn’t the only measure that’s part of the district’s approved plan to deal with its enrollment challenges, however. Consolidation of two existing schools will allow room for expanded programs to serve students within the community.

Hulstrom K-8, a gifted magnet school with a waiting list, will relocate to the Shadow Ridge Middle School campus, which will enable Hulstrom to expand from about 690 students in grades K-8 to approximately 950 students in preschool through eighth grade.
