The Dorchester County (Maryland) District is moving forward with plans to replace five aging elementary schools.

WBOC-TV reports that district officials have described Hurlock, Maple, Sand Hill, Vienna and Warwick elementary schools as outdated facilities that no longer meet modern educational standards. The district's other two elementary schools have been renovated recently and are not part of this plan.

The district has established a prioritization system based on enrollment, building condition and cost to determine which school will be rebuilt first.

District leaders say they are still evaluating each school's condition; a final decision is expected from the school board in June.

Once the board decides which construction will have top priority, the district will submit a funding request to the state.
