The Carter County (Tenn.) school district is looking at constructing a 64,000-square-foot addition at Hunter Elementary School in Elizabethton.
The $20 million addition would be built behind the existing preK-8 facility and would enable the school to separate elementary grades from middle-level grades, reports the Johnson City Press.
The expansion would increase overall capacity to 925 students and make the school the largest elementary school in the district.
The plans call for a new gymnasium and stage in the middle school section.
Other features would include a new cafeteria wing and kitchen, a music room, a science lab, art room and resource rooms.
To move forward with construction, the district would need about $3 million from the county. Other funding would come from the district's $10.5 million Elementary and Secondary Schools Emergency Relief Fund.
If the addition gets approval, officials said construction would begin in the spring.
