Plans move forward to replace Las Cruces, N.M., school closed in 2018 because of mold

June 8, 2021
Under the latest plan, construction of a new Columbia Elementary School will begin in 2023.

Three years after mold contamination forced the Las Cruces (N.M.) district to close one of its elementary schools, the board has received an updated plan for replacing the facility.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reports that reconstruction of Columbia Elementary School now is expected to begin in April 2023, and will not be completed until April 2024.

The district closed the campus in 2018 because of severe mold infestation. Since then, the dislocated students have been attending classes at Centennial High School.

In November 2020, the school board upheld a previous decision to tear down and rebuild Columbia. The Public School Capital Outlay Council approved the plan.

Planning and design for the new facility are estimated to begin in November 2021.
