Construction Zone: Inspiring design
Prior to renovation, the chemistry laboratory in the Megerle Science Building at Wagner College, Staten Island, N.Y., was deficient in key areas. Storage was inadequate; hood space was not maximized; and workstations were not configured to promote student interaction or optimal instructor supervision.
The lab first was divided into two work areas: a materials preparation area, and a classroom area for lectures and conducting experiments. Air, gas, electric and vacuum outlets were moved to a central station, and workstations were redesigned so students can work with lab partners.
The result is a clean, uncluttered, spacious work surface for students to conduct experiments. A centrally positioned whiteboard promotes a unified academic atmosphere in the classroom.
