Michigan State University is seeking construction bids for a modernization of its football stadium that is anticipated to cost $500 million.

The Detroit News reports that the upgrades of Spartan Stadium on the East Lansing campus will be partly funded through the recently announced billion-dollar FOR SPARTA campaign.

Renderings showing a potential plan for the exterior of the 74,866-seat stadium showed a new entrance to the stadium with a giant projection screen and a "floating" green Spartan helmet.

As of now, and pending university board approval, construction would begin in November 2027 and would be completed in time for the 2029 football season.

The request for proposal noted that a 2022 facilities study found Michigan State's athletic facilities to be "deficient" compared with other major universities.

The planned upgrades include massive overhauls of the stadium's exterior and interior. The project would add over 58,000 square feet in premium spaces, including expanded club seating areas with amenities.

The student section would also see upgrades. A 3,000-square-foot "student social area" is referenced in the request. The plans also include a "safe standing area," a patio and a "selfie platform."

A 5,000-square-foot team store and a "Spartan Vision" broadcast center are also proposed.

Other upgrades to the stadium include improving accessibility and replacing refrigeration, fire alarm, heating and cooling, and electrical systems.
