University of Memphis acquires site for middle school

Sept. 5, 2019
The university has just opened the University Middle School, which it runs in partnership with the Shelby County district.

The University of Memphis Board of Trustees has approved the acquisition of a site for a middle school it operates in partnership with the local school district.

The Memphis Commercial Appeal reports that the site for University Middle School includes a portion of Audubon Park Baptist Church, as well as three additional residential parcels. Officials say the site could also accommodate a high school in the future.

University Middle, which opened last month for sixth-graders, is sharing a campus this year at East High School in Memphis.

At full enrollment, the school will serve 240 children in grades 6 to 8 in a partnership with the Shelby County School District.

The middle school was supposed to open this year in a vacant Catholic school, but the university had to find another site for the school when Catholic officials said it couldn't allow any programs at their site that was objectionable to the Catholic faith.
