The North Thurston (Wash.) district has added three electric school buses to its fleet.
The addition is a part of the district's efforts to promote clean energy, reports ThurstonTalk.
A $720,000 grant from the state's Department of Ecology enabled the district to acquire the buses.
The district had already bought five electric cars and several propane buses.
The electric buses average 25 to 34 miles per gallon compared with a standard diesel bus's seven miles per gallon.
Each bus gets a full charge in three hours and can run for about 120 miles. In addition to lower fuel costs, the electric buses require less maintenance. The buses require no oil or air filter changes, no plug or coil maintenance, and no transmission work.
