The Gwinnett County (Georgia) School Board has hired Alexandra Estrella as superintendent.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Estrella now serves as superintendent of the Norwalk (Connecticut) district. Her two-year contract in Gwinnett County will begin on July 1.
Board Vice Chair Adrienne Simmons said Estrella is a "visionary leader" who will help them address growing gaps in student achievement.
Before working in Norwalk, Estrella was in the New York City school system, serving for seven years as the superintendent of Community School District 4 in East Harlem.
In 2008, she opened a dual-language school in New York City called Esperanza Preparatory Academy. She went on to establish New York City's first dual-language preschool program, and expanded pathways for multilingual learners in Norwalk Public Schools.
Gwinnett County has been without a permanent superintendent since January 2025, when it fired Calvin Watts after less than four years. Al Taylor, previously the district's chief of schools, has been serving as interim superintendent since April 2025.
