Nine months after she took on the job on an interim basis, Fabiola Bagula has been appointed superintendent of the San Diego Unified School District.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that school board approved a four-year contract for Bagula with a $440,000 annual salary.

Bagula had been a deputy superintendent until September 2024, when she became interim superintendent. She replaced Lamont Jackson, who left the job amid sexual misconduct accusations.

Bagula also has been an area superintendent and a school principal in San Diego and worked as the County Office of Education's senior director of equity. She is the first Latina to serve as San Diego's school superintendent.

Bagula had been named in one of the legal claims filed against the district detailing allegations against Jackson. Bagula has said an investigation found she had not mistreated employees.

Board members had previously indicated last fall that they were interested in keeping Bagula full-time rather than launching a  superintendent search.
