Houston Community College is getting a new name: Houston City College.
Houston Public Media reports that the change seeks to reflect the college system’s new educational opportunities, including four-year degree programs. Costs associated with the rebrand are expected to be about $2.8 million
A survey of students and teachers indicated that the new name would better communicate the college's educational quality and diverse programs.
“They told us clearly that programs matter, and that a name should reflect what an institution offers academically and professionally,” said Andrea Burridge, the vice chancellor of strategic, planning and institutional effectiveness.
In another survey, most employers said they preferred to hire a graduate from a four-year college rather than a community college.
The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission of Colleges in 2022 gave Houston Community College the go-ahead to offer bachelor of applied science degrees.
“There’s clear evidence that coming from a college with a baccalaureate gives a bump to the employability because people don’t expect a baccalaureate from a community college,” Burridge said.
Temporary signage and new building signs are projected to cost $1.15 million, and replacing temporary signage with permanent signs will cost $1.65 million.
