Superintendent of Kansas's largest district announces retirement

Alicia Thompson has led the Wichita district since 2017 and is the first woman and African American to hold the position.

The superintendent of the Wichita (Kan.) district, Alicia Thompson, has announced that she will retire at the end of the school year. 

She is the first woman and first African American to serve as the district's superintendent, reports The Wichita Eagle

The 47,500-student school system is the largest district in Kansas.

Thompson, 53, has been superintendent in Wichita since 2017 and has worked for the district for 31 years.
